Dr. Xiaohui Ju and coworkers from Nanomaterials Group recently published their work on the “poly(acrylic acid)-mediated synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles with variable oxidation states and their effect on regulating the intracellular ROS level“ in the Journal of Materials Chemistry B. This paper was selected for the journal front cover page. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeNPs) working as nanozymes were prepared by a novel synthetic method modifying the CeNPs´ surface oxidation state by changing the conformation of the poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) polymers. The series of PAA-CeNPs exhibited multiple redox enzyme mimetic activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and oxidase). All tested PAA-CeNPs were non-toxic, internalized in cells and reduced the basal and hydrogen peroxide-induced intracellular ROS level. The work has been done jointly by the teams from Charles University, Czech Academy of Sciences and Technical University of Liberec.

The cover art shows schematically CeNPs modified with PAA in the surrounding with ROS inside the cell.
